Lake District

by Kayla Kluver

This past weekend my boyfriend I and made the six hour drive from London to The Lake District in NW England. Honestly, worth every agonising moment on the M6. Green grassy mountains and blue lakes for days. We stayed in a B&B near Keswick called the Little Town Farm http://www.littletownfarm.co.uk/ . It was nestled in the Newland's valley - about a 10 minute drive from the nearest town and down some very narrow dirt roads.  Our room was modest in size and decor, but we were only in there to sleep. Each morning the alarm clock - aka the resident rooster - sounded at dawn. A tad early for my liking but it got us up and down for breakfast ahead of the other guests. Sarah, one of the owners, is a trained chef and each morning served a traditional farmhouse breakfast - sausage, eggs, black pudding and fresh fruit. She also provided packed lunches to take on the trails - gorgeous ham sandwiches with her homemade chutney, crisps and big-as-my head chocolate brownies (honestly, I didn't even need the sandwich). Sarah and her husband Rob were incredibly accommodating - they helped us map out our hikes each day and recommended pubs and restaurants in the area. There were stunning trails straight from the front door so after breakfast we were straight out in the sun. Being a novice hiker I wore running shoes, but I would have benefited from proper hiking boots (and felt a whole lot safer scrambling up the rocky ledges). We finished each day with a pint and meal at a nearby pub called the Farmer's Arms. It was unpretentious and cosy and the food was hearty and filling - exactly what we needed after hours on the fells. Then it was early to bed and repeat. I didn't realise how much I needed a respite from the city - the fresh air and exercise worked wonders and I came back more relaxed than I had been in weeks. I feel quite lucky to have this nearby. I will be back again - no doubt.

Before the trip I went to H&M and stocked up on some new athletic gear - sports bras, shorts and tops all under £20. I also picked up a pair of their high-waisted running tights that are amazing. I've been trying to work out a way to make them office appropriate so I never have to take them off. So comfy. KKxx
